Train Passengers in Indonesia Decreased in August 2025

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 45.58 million train passengers in Indonesia throughout August 2025.

This figure includes train passengers on Java and non-Java islands (Sumatra and Sulawesi), including airport trains, MRT, LRT, and the Whoosh high-speed train.

The number of domestic train passengers in August 2025 decreased by 9.02% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/mtm). This decline occurred across all segments.

Here are the details of the number and growth of train passengers in Indonesia in August 2025 by segment: 

• Jabodetabek commuter trains: 28.94 million passengers, down 7.81% (mtm)
• Trains on Java island outside Jabodetabek: 7.74 million passengers, down 14.70% (mtm)
• Trains in non-Java regions: 546.4 thousand passengers, down 15.43% (mtm) 
• Airport trains: 786.1 thousand passengers, down 4.33% (mtm)
• MRT trains: 3.98 million passengers, down 8.46% (mtm)
• LRT trains: 3.21 million passengers, down 5.67% (mtm)
• Whoosh high-speed train: 533.9 thousand passengers, down 8% (mtm)

Cumulatively, the number of train passengers in Indonesia from January to August 2025 reached 357.5 million people. The volume increased by 8.83% from the same period last year (cumulative-to-cumulative/ctc).
