Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, August 30, 2024)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 09:28 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 900 meters above the peak or 1,987 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 71.77 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 30, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 252 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-27 millimeters and durations of 30.89-82.37 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 30 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-10 millimeters, s-p 12.87-35.96 seconds, and durations of 49.67-150.19 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-4 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,280 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,265 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 36 times.
