Waste Piles Up on Streets, Tangsel Environmental Agency Opts to Cover with Tarpaulins
Piles of waste were seen at several points in Tangerang Selatan City last mid-December, such as under the Ciputat flyover and near the Serpong Community Health Center. The Tangerang Selatan City Government then covered the waste piles with tarpaulins and sprayed a special liquid to minimize unpleasant odors.
The Head of the Tangerang Selatan City Environmental Agency (DLH), Bani Khosyatullah, stated that this measure is a temporary handling while ensuring that the waste collection and management process runs optimally.
"We are covering with tarpaulins and spraying to suppress the odor impact, especially for residents around the location. This is part of a rapid response to keep the situation under control and not disrupt community activities," Bani said in an official statement, quoted Monday (December 15, 2025).
He added that the spraying is done using an environmentally friendly liquid that functions to suppress unpleasant odors while maintaining the cleanliness of the area around the waste piles. Officers are also continuously on standby to monitor the field conditions regularly.
These waste piles occurred after the Cipeucang Landfill was temporarily closed for repairs. These repair efforts are the Tangerang Selatan City Government's response to public protests increasingly burdened by waste and leachate from the site.
Various repair efforts currently underway include the arrangement of landfill 3 using the terracing method along the Cirompang tributary, as well as the construction of gabions. The DLH is also opening road access to landfill 4 and acquiring land for a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) or modern waste processing facility.
"We ask for public support. With collaborative efforts, we can overcome this waste problem gradually and sustainably," Bani said.
