Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, June 20, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (20/6/2024) at 00.43 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 15 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 2,500 meters above the peak or 3,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 127 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 20, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters and a duration of 49 seconds.

Then, there were 8 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-28 millimeters and durations of 27-43 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 8-11 millimeters and durations of 20-38 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,208 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (529 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 149 times.
