Train Passenger Numbers Decline in September 2024

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 35.3 million in September 2024. This figure includes train passengers on Java and Sumatra islands, including airport trains.

The number of national train passengers in September 2024 decreased by 1.43% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/mtm), which reached 35.8 million passengers.

"(The decrease is because) the number of days in September 2024 was relatively fewer than the previous month," said the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia A. Widyasanti, in a press conference on Friday (1/11/2024).

In September 2024, the majority of passengers were from Jabodetabek commuter train users, namely 27.6 million people or 78.20% of the total national train passengers. However, their volume decreased by 2.13% (mtm).

Meanwhile, the number of train passengers in non-Jabodetabek Java increased by 0.75% (mtm) to 6.45 million people, on Sumatra Island increased by 0.47% (mtm) to 491,400 people, and airport trains increased by 5.79% (mtm) to 659,700 people.

Cumulatively, the number of national train passengers from January to September 2024 reached 312.8 million people, a surge of 14.28% compared to the same period last year (cumulative-to-cumulative/c-t-c).

Cumulative increases occurred in the Jabodetabek region by 14.60% (ctc), non-Jabodetabek Java by 12.47% (ctc), and airport trains by 57.32% (ctc). Meanwhile, the number of train passengers in Sumatra decreased by 10.62% (ctc).
