Bank Central Asia (BCA) and Bank Danamon were rated as the banks with the best anti-corruption commitment in Indonesia in 2022.
This assessment is recorded in the *2022 Bank Ranking Report: Measuring the Progress of Sustainable Financial Policies in Indonesian Banking* from the research institution Prakarsa.
Prakarsa assessed the anti-corruption commitment of 11 banks operating in Indonesia. These banks were selected as representatives of the largest national commercial banks, foreign banks, and regional development banks.
The assessment was conducted based on an analysis of annual reports, sustainability reports, information on company websites, policy documents, and other relevant information disclosed by the banks to the public.
The analysis then focused on corporate loans, project financing, assets owned, client assets managed, and the policy materials of each bank.
Prakarsa formulated the results of their analysis into a score ranging from 0 to 10, with the following categorization:
* Score 0 to 1.9: Very poor commitment
* Score 2 to 3.9: Poor commitment
* Score 4 to 5.9: Sufficient commitment
* Score 6 to 7.9: Good commitment
* Score 8 to 10: Very good commitment
In 2022, BCA and Danamon both achieved a score of 5 in anti-corruption commitment, the highest among all banks analyzed.
According to Prakarsa, BCA has an anti-corruption score categorized as "sufficient" because it has anti-bribery, anti-money laundering, and anti-terrorist financing policies. Danamon also possesses similar policies.
"BCA verifies the ultimate beneficial owners of companies and has additional safeguards related to financing involving Politically Exposed Persons," said the Prakarsa team in their report.
"Bank Danamon also has a policy of not being involved in political activities, including providing donations in any form, and specifically reported in 2021 that it did not provide funds for political activities," it continued.
According to Prakarsa, banks with low anti-corruption scores generally lack a management system that results in immediate action if there is suspicion that their employees or clients are engaging in corruption.
Of the 11 banks analyzed, only 4 received an anti-corruption commitment score in the "sufficient" category: BCA, Danamon, HSBC, and Bank Permata.
The majority, or 7 other banks, received anti-corruption commitment scores in the "poor" category: CIMB Niaga, BNI, BRI, Bank BJB, Bank Mandiri, Maybank, and DBS Indonesia.
