Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Height 800 Meters Above Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday (17/12/2025) at 10:43 AM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 10 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak or 2,125 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity to the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 13 millimeters and a duration of 83 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 17, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 100 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 30-100 seconds.

Subsequently, 3 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 33-43 seconds, and 18 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-15 millimeters and durations of 27-123 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 7,369 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (3,036 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 2,664 times.
