Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Evening (Friday, March 7, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 5:15 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 47 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 80 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 7, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM WIT showed 18 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 39-47 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 62 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 4-7 millimeters and durations of 11-20 seconds, and 65 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 7-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,949 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (916 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 808 times.
