Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, December 8, 2024)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at 06:38 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 7 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 3,000 meters above the peak (4,087 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 8, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 63 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 33.2-576.02 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7 millimeters, S-P times of 5.01-5.08 seconds, and durations of 46.38-51.53 seconds; and 4 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-30 millimeters, S-P times of 10.16-27.46 seconds, and durations of 61.62-100.79 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,788 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,389 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 61 times.
