The Ministry of Finance reported that Indonesia's State Budget (APBN) experienced a deficit of Rp240.1 trillion in the first quarter of 2026. This figure equates to 0.93% of the gross domestic product (GDP).

This deficit surged by 140.5% from the first quarter of last year (year-on-year/yoy), which amounted to Rp99.8 trillion or 0.41% of GDP.

Minister of Finance, Purbaya Sadewa, said that the APBN was indeed designed for a deficit. According to him, this is not something harmful.

By the end of March 2026, the realization of state revenue reached Rp574.9 trillion, an increase of 10.5% (yoy).

However, state spending was even higher, amounting to Rp815 trillion, a surge of 31.4% (yoy).

Purbaya explained that this acceleration of spending is a government strategy to ensure that the fiscal impact can be felt more evenly throughout 2026.

"Indeed, we want spending to be carried out more evenly throughout the year, so that the economic impact will be more significant," he said.
