Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Plume Approximately 300 Meters High

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday (10/1/2026) at 11:47 AM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 28 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to be around 300 meters above the peak or 1,625 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 33 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 10, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 122 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-28 millimeters and durations of 37-74 seconds.

Subsequently, 2 times of exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 32-34 seconds, and 11 times of harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-15 millimeters and durations of 27-196 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 147 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (85 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 53 times.
