Mount Semeru Erupts Again Early This Morning (Thursday, January 29, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (January 29, 2026) at 04:47 AM WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 16 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 4,176 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 123 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 29, 2026, from 18:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed 20 eruption tremors with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 66-120 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 rockfall tremor with an amplitude of 8 mm and a duration of 66 seconds, as well as 7 emission tremors with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 36-61 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is potential for it to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 381 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 198 occurrences.
