Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Saturday, February 1, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11:01 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 90 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 1, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 15 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 47-80 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 19 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-15 millimeters and durations of 14-55 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 7 millimeters and a duration of 76 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 974 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (483 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 430 times.
