Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, January 22, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (January 22, 2026) at 11:34 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 19 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Eruption visuals were not observed. Mount Semeru's eruption was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 22, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 31 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 68-157 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 2 avalanche earthquakes with an amplitude of 3 mm and durations of 49-55 seconds, and 5 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 50-69 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, as there is potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 305 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 165 occurrences.
