Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, August 21, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (8/21/2025) at 8:59 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 2.7 millimeters and a duration of 48 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 21, 2025, from 12:00-18:00 WITA, showed 23 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.7-16 millimeters and durations of 39-41 seconds. Additionally, there were 46 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.2-5.8 millimeters and durations of 24-38 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/hikers/tourists, not to enter or engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of the potential dangers from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast, West, and Northeast sectors of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,729 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most (2,297 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 243 times.
