Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Evening (Wednesday, January 8, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 5:51 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 21 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 56 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 8, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 15 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 9-28 millimeters and durations of 56-83 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 26 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-13 millimeters and durations of 14-61 seconds, and 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 61-151 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 166 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (114 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 45 times.
