Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Tuesday, January 27, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday (1/27/2026) at 12:51 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 12 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption's visual was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 110 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 27, 2026, from 06:00-12:00 WIB, showed 29 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 59-131 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 puff earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 37-57 seconds, and 1 felt earthquake, scale III MMI, with an amplitude of 45 millimeters, S-P not observed, and a duration of 433 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 362 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most with 194 occurrences.
