Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, January 26, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (1/26/2026) at 05:22 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). In the last week, Mount Semeru only erupted once.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 133 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Seismicity observations on January 26, 2026, from 18:00-23:59 WIB showed 22 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 96-173 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-7 mm and durations of 32-47 seconds, and 4 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-7 millimeters and durations of 31-68 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, due to the potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 338 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 183 recorded.
