Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, March 9, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (March 9, 2026) at 11:28 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column is around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 millimeters and a duration of 115 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 9, 2026, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB showed 19 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 71-145 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 5 millimeters and duration of 39 seconds, and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters, s-p interval of 2 seconds, and duration of 14 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents should avoid activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 917 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 470 events.
