National Train Passenger Numbers Decline in Early 2025

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 43.35 million in January 2025.

This figure includes train passengers on Java and non-Java islands (Sumatra and Sulawesi), including airport trains, MRT, LRT, and the Whoosh high-speed rail.

The number of national train passengers at the beginning of this year decreased by 5.48% compared to December 2024 (month-to-month/mtm). This decrease occurred across all train routes.

In January 2025, the most passengers came from Jabodetabek commuter train users, namely 27.5 million people or 63.49% of the total national train passengers. However, the volume decreased by 4.52% (mtm).

Then, train passengers in non-Jabodetabek Java decreased by 11.03% (mtm) to 7.76 million passengers; in non-Java regions, it decreased by 3.21% (mtm) to 602,200 passengers; and airport trains decreased by 1.32% (mtm) to 764,700 passengers.

Similarly, MRT passengers decreased by 1.57% (mtm) to 3.53 million passengers; LRT decreased by 2.39% (mtm) to 2.63 million passengers; and Whoosh high-speed rail plummeted by 15.86% (mtm) to 525,200 passengers.
