According to a Rakuten Insight Global survey, most Southeast Asian citizens hold a positive view of digital applications.

The digital applications included in this survey encompass various types of apps, such as social media, online shopping apps, digital banking apps, and others.

The Southeast Asian country with the highest positive sentiment towards digital applications is the Philippines.

The proportion of Filipino respondents viewing apps positively reached 84%, comprising 60% who rated them very positively and 24% positively.

Indonesia ranked second, with a 78% positive sentiment towards apps. This breaks down to 45% very positive and 33% positive.

However, 4% of Indonesian respondents viewed digital applications negatively, consisting of 3% negative and 1% very negative.

Generally, negative sentiment stemmed from respondents who felt that apps consumed excessive device memory, were difficult to use, offered inferior social interaction compared to in-person interaction, had high subscription fees, and so on.

Despite this, the group that perceived more benefits from apps remained dominant.

Positive sentiment was shown by the majority of respondents in several other surveyed Southeast Asian countries, namely Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia, although the proportions varied as shown in the graph.

This survey also found that social media was the most globally installed application (74%), followed by shopping apps (71%), finance and banking apps (57%), and messaging apps (52%).

Rakuten conducted this survey among 6,332 respondents spread across Asia Pacific (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Singapore) plus the United States.

Data was collected in July 2023 using an online survey method from a dedicated Rakuten Insight panel.
