Manchester United Tops Real Madrid and Barcelona as the Richest Club in 2016

Manchester United (MU) became the richest club in the world after its revenue surged by €169 billion (32.6 percent) to €689 billion (approximately Rp 2,404 trillion) in 2016. In 2015, MU's revenue was only €519.5 billion. This phenomenal growth in commercial revenue enabled the Red Devils to become the world's richest club for the first time since the 2003/2004 season.

Unfortunately, this fantastic revenue was not matched by on-field achievements. In the Champions League, MU was eliminated in the group stage, and domestically they finished 5th.

The second richest club in the world in 2016 was Barcelona, with revenue of €620.2 billion, up from €560.8 billion the previous year. Real Madrid occupied third place, with revenue of €620.1 billion in 2016, a narrow margin behind their fierce rivals in La Liga, Barcelona. Real Madrid's revenue growth was significantly lower than MU's, resulting in the richest club title transferring to the Manchester-based English club.
