Kompas Research and Development: Majority of Public Believes Political Ethics Must Be Maintained During Elections

Recent Kompas Research and Development survey results show that the majority, or 96.1%, of respondents agree that political ethics must be upheld during the 2024 General Election.

The details show that 32.7% of respondents felt it was important, and 63.4% considered it very important.

Meanwhile, a small percentage, or 2.3%, of respondents felt it was unnecessary to maintain political ethics during the election. This comprises 2.2% who answered "not important" and 0.1% who answered "very unimportant."

Kompas Research and Development also surveyed respondents' opinions on the appropriateness of the president supporting a particular candidate pair in the election. 54.4% of respondents considered this inappropriate because the president should remain neutral.

Conversely, 45.6% of respondents believed the president has the right to support a candidate pair, as it is regulated by law.

The neutrality of state officials is regulated in Article 283 Paragraph 1 of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, which reads:

“State officials, structural officials, and functional officials in state positions, as well as civil servants, are prohibited from engaging in activities that lead to bias towards election participants, during and after the campaign period.”

Prohibited forms of bias include meetings, invitations, appeals, calls, and the giving of money.

This survey involved 510 respondents from 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was randomly selected from Kompas Research and Development panel respondents according to the population proportion in each province.

Data collection was conducted from January 29 to February 2, 2024, using telephone interview methods. This survey has a margin of error of approximately 4.35% under simple random sampling conditions, and a 95% confidence level.
