Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, March 20, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday (March 20, 2026) at 10:21 PM WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 24 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

Eruption visuals were not observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 57 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 20, 2026 from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 105 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-28 millimeters and durations of 30-69 seconds.

Then, 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 8 millimeters and duration of 40 seconds, as well as 13 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-28 millimeters and durations of 48-190 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,106 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (596 eruptions) while Mount Ibu has erupted 439 times.
