Many political parties are nominating artists or celebrities as legislative candidates (caleg) in the 2024 General Election, including soap opera actors, television presenters, chefs, musicians, models, athletes, social media influencers, religious preachers, and comedians.
According to political researcher Syamsuddin Haris, this phenomenon of celebrity calegs is a symptom of poor party cadre development.
"It's undeniable that the basis of competition in our legislative elections since 2009 has been the popularity of the caleg candidates put forward by political parties, on the one hand, and financial capabilities on the other. The system, unfortunately, relies more on mere fame than on the capabilities of the calegs, so celebrity calegs have a great opportunity to gain support and be elected," said Syamsuddin in his article *Caleg Artis, So What* (May 2013).
"If political parties worked on political education, cadre development, and leadership selection periodically and democratically as a daily routine for 4-5 years before the election, then they wouldn't actually need celebrity calegs. Also, if political parties didn't just chase the parliamentary threshold percentage as a prerequisite for gaining power in the legislature," he continued.
Syamsuddin also emphasized that the performance of elected officials cannot be judged solely on popularity.
"Experience since 2009 shows that not all celebrity legislators can work and perform optimally as representatives of the people. They are generally the same as most non-celebrity DPR members whose performance is also overshadowed by the hustle and bustle of our politics and democracy," said Syamsuddin.
"However, some of them, to mention just a few examples, Nurul Arifin and Rieke Diah Pitaloka, must be acknowledged for having good performance, even above the average performance of non-celebrity DPR members. But it should also be noted that Nurul and Rieke were already performing well before they became members of parliament," he continued.
According to data compiled by *CNN Indonesia*, the National Mandate Party (PAN) is the party that has nominated the most celebrity calegs for next year's election.
