According to a survey by IDN Research Institute and Populix, Indonesian Gen Z and millennials acquire homes through various means.

The majority, or 52% of respondents, received their housing as an inheritance or gift from family.

"For many Indonesians, the ability to independently purchase a home remains financially out of reach," wrote IDN Research Institute in its report, *Indonesia Millennial & Gen Z Report 2025*.

Eighteen percent of respondents bought a home using their own savings, while only 10% obtained a mortgage (KPR) or apartment loan (KPA).

"This indicates limited access to credit or a reluctance to take on debt, likely due to high-interest rates, unstable income, or other financial challenges," wrote IDN Research Institute.

Furthermore, 6% of respondents rented, 2% purchased a home using informal loans, and another 12% lived with their parents.

This survey involved 1,500 respondents, comprising 750 millennials and 750 Gen Z respondents spread across 12 major Indonesian cities.

IDN Research Institute defines millennials as the population group aged 28-43 years, and Gen Z as aged 12-27 years in 2024.

Data collection was conducted from March to August 2024 through in-depth interviews.
