The stages of the general election (Pemilu) began on June 14, 2022, although the election itself will be held in February 2024.
In addition to preparing for the election, the General Election Commission (KPU) must conduct education on the importance of the election for national life and statehood to optimize voter participation.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the voter participation rate in the House of Representatives (DPR) election only reached 81.69% in 2019.
Specifically, there were 192.77 million registered voters in the Permanent Voter List (DPT) for the 2019 legislative election. However, only 157.48 million voters exercised their right to vote. Meanwhile, 35.3 million voters did not use their right to vote.
DKI Jakarta was recorded as the province with the lowest participation rate in the 2019 DPR election, at only 73.8% of the total DPT. Of the 9.75 million registered voters, only 7.2 million exercised their right to vote.
The provinces with the next lowest participation rates in the DPR election were North Sumatra at 77.85%, followed by West Sumatra at 78.78%, Central Kalimantan at 78.99%, Maluku at 79.18%, and North Kalimantan at 79.3%.
Next was East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) with a voter participation rate in the legislative election of 80.03%. Then Central Java at 80.04%, East Kalimantan at 80.14%, and Lampung at 80.5%.
