Mount Ibu Erupts on Tuesday Afternoon, Status Remains at Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (February 6, 2024) at 2:07 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 4 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak or 2,125 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 102 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on February 6, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 19 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 22-99 seconds.

Then, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 2 mm and a duration of 31 seconds, and 220 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 155 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (53 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 28 times.
