Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted Early Wednesday Morning; Status Remains on Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 4:00 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 200 meters above the peak or 1,784 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate to thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 318 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on May 1, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7.4-44.4 millimeters and durations of 78-350 seconds.

Then, there was 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 51 seconds, and 1 low-frequency quake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 19 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 607 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (201 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 79 times.
