Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 1,300 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 08:57 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 1,300 meters above the peak (2,625 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 129 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 20, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 40 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 24-129 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 87 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 70-159 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 95 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (46 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 14 times.
