Mount Marapi Erupts Again Tonight (Sunday, April 21, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 8:10 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.6 millimeters and a duration of 38 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 21, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 4 instances of puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.2 millimeters and durations of 38-134 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.2 millimeters, an s-p time of 1.9 seconds, and a duration of 13 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-1 millimeter, predominantly 0.5 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to not enter and not carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 568 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (184 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 170 times.
