Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Eruption Height Reaches 1,000 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (8/17/2025) at 6:30 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 4 times.

Reporting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 178 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Awas - Alert). Seismic observations on August 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA, showed 5 times of exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-7.4 millimeters and earthquake durations of 32-60 seconds.

Subsequently, 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 63 seconds, and 11 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 63-164 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a Sectoral West-North-Northeast distance of 7 kilometers from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,655 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,271 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 456 times.
