Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, March 17, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 00:35 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak (2,025 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 65 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 17, 2025, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIT showed 18 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 400-600 millimeters and durations of 31-87 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 23 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-11 millimeters and durations of 16-84 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 50-67 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,235 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,025 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 905 times.
