Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Early This Morning (Tuesday, July 9, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (July 9, 2024) at 04:17 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 200 meters above the peak or 1,784 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23.6 millimeters and a duration of 250 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 9, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-47.3 millimeters and durations of 223-241 seconds.

Then, there were 8 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-14.8 millimeters and durations of 7-10 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 22.9 millimeters, s-p 1.2 seconds, and a duration of 14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,533 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (677 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 324 times.
