Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts on Sunday Afternoon, Activity Level at Alert

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (September 28, 2025) at 3:49 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 8 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18.8 millimeters and a duration of 62 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 28, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 83 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.7-33.7 millimeters and earthquake durations of 34-84 seconds.

Subsequently, 60 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.8-9.3 millimeters and durations of 27-49 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and a duration of 106 seconds were recorded.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and hot clouds from the South and Southeast, West, and Northeast sectors of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,413 volcano eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,520 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 285 times.
