Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted Early Monday Morning; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (July 8, 2024) at 02:49 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 3 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak (2,284 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 444 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 8, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 517 seconds.

Then, there were 2 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-8.8 millimeters and durations of 24-25 seconds, and 30 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-29.6 millimeters and durations of 7-13 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northwest, north, and south-southeast directions from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,506 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (665 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 317 times.
