Mount Ibu Erupted in the Early Hours of Saturday, Status is Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday (February 21, 2026) at 01:36 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 28 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No visual observation of the eruption was made. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 40 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on February 21, 2026 from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 93 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 12-28 millimeters and a duration of 36-68 seconds.

Then, 1 emission earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters and a duration of 43 seconds, as well as 17 harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 3-28 millimeters and a duration of 51-172 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 703 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (375 times) while Mount Ibu has erupted 286 times.
