Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, January 10, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 9:04 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 47 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 58 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 10, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 6 eruption quakes with an amplitude of 28 millimeters and durations of 43-145 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 2-10 mm and durations of 21-63 seconds, and 36 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 14-66 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5.5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 219 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (140 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 71 times.
