Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today, Eruption Height 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (16/8/2024) at 01.20 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 24 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak (2,084 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 209 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 16, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 191 seconds.

Then, 1 puff earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 104 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and durations of 53-234 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northwest, north, and south-southeast directions from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,850 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,061 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 508 times.
