Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Thursday, December 25, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (25/12/2025) at 07:00 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 30 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be around 800 meters above the peak or 4,476 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 15 millimeters and a duration of 104 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on December 25, 2025, from 00:00-06:00 WIB showed 34 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-23 millimeters and durations of 93-161 seconds.

Then, 2 rockfall earthquakes with an amplitude of 2 mm and durations of 42-56 seconds, and 6 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-6 millimeters and durations of 49-107 seconds occurred.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 7,505 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 3,128 occurrences.
