Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, December 22, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 10:55 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 30 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 68 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on December 22, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 20-28 millimeters and durations of 50-110 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 31 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-19 millimeters and durations of 19-56 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-20 millimeters and durations of 31-152 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,026 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions, with 2,491.
