Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Plume Around 400 Meters High

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday (6/1/2026) at 08:07 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 2 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak (4,076 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity moving northeast. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 6, 2026, from 00:00-06:00 WIB, showed 37 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 56-143 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 avalanche earthquakes with amplitudes of 3 mm and durations of 46-69 seconds, and 8 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 38-82 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people are advised not to conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 75 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most, with 39 eruptions.
