Alert! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, February 26, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (February 26, 2026) at 10:12 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 21 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

Visual observation of the eruption was not recorded. The eruption was detected on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 millimeters and a duration of 118 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on February 26, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 24 eruption/earthquake events with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 62-213 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 collapse earthquake with an amplitude of 5 mm and a duration of 86 seconds, as well as 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10 millimeters, an S-P interval of 40 seconds, and a duration of 101 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, residents are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lahar flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 778 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the highest number of eruptions with 405 events.
