Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Monday Morning, Alert Status

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (August 18, 2025) at 09:11 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 7 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 4,000 meters above the peak (5,584 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44 millimeters and a duration of 167 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 18, 2025, at 00:00-06:00 WITA showed 2 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 482-515 seconds.

Followed by 9 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 14.8-22.2 mm and durations of 40-145 seconds, and 24 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-44.4 millimeters and durations of 31-59 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sectoral area to the West-North-Northeast from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,672 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,275 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 463 times.
