The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.51 million cases by Monday, May 15, 2023. The United States recorded the highest number of Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 0.29 percent. GISAID recorded 2.39 million Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 0.04 percent compared to the previous day.
Japan follows with a weekly growth in Omicron cases reaching 0.56 percent. The number of Omicron cases reported in the country totaled 410,690, compared to 408,400 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five countries are India with 134,330 Omicron cases (up 0.31%), Spain with 111,560 cases (up 0.89%), and North Korea with 109,870 cases (up 1.08%).
As of today, Indonesia has recorded 36,511 Omicron cases, a 0.46 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
