Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, March 12, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 5:44 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 34 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,200 meters above the peak (2,525 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 75 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 12, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 14 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 16-28 millimeters and durations of 37-51 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 23 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 3-13 millimeters and durations of 19-25 seconds, and 34 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 4-6 millimeters and durations of 15-18 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,113 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (991 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 866 times.
