Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 11:13 WITA (West Indonesia Time). This marks the fourth eruption in the past week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column reached an observed height of approximately 1,000 meters above the peak, or 2,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 484 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA on October 28, 2024, showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 208 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters, an S-P time of 1.3 seconds, and a duration of 12 seconds; and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters, an S-P time of 5.6 seconds, and a duration of 29 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and within a 4-kilometer radius in the northeast sector and a 5-kilometer radius in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,611 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku experienced the most eruptions (1,876 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 841 times.
