After the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, many Indonesian citizens planned to travel in 2022. This can be seen from Google search data throughout 2022.
Generally, searches for domestic travel increased by 51% year-on-year (YoY).
Specifically, there was a surge in searches for 'Bali tickets' (70%) and 'Medan tickets' (55%). Searches for 'Surabaya tourism' increased by 70% and 'Jogjakarta tourism' by 50%.
Tourist villages also attracted attention. Searches for 'Penglipuran', a tourist village in Bali, increased by 112% this year.
'Potrobayan', a tourist village for camping in Yogyakarta, saw a 92% increase.
People also seemed interested in less-visited areas frequently featured on social media, such as 'Penida' (Bali), which saw a 117% surge.
'Gili' (West Nusa Tenggara) increased by 108%, and 'Kintamani' (Bali) by 38%.
This fifth edition of Year in Search (YIS) was created by Google to provide insights into macro and industry-specific trends.
Google believes that this search data allows industry players to understand not only how Indonesians' shopping habits are changing, but also how they work and perceive the future in a rapidly changing economic climate.
This report is divided into three main themes: soul searching, value hunting, and finding joy. It also covers six main industry verticals: technology; media and entertainment; beauty and personal care; food and beverage; transportation and travel; and finance.
