According to data compiled by iPrice, in the second quarter of 2022, Shopee had an average of 131.3 million website visitors per month. This figure was lower than Tokopedia, which attracted 158.3 million website visitors per month during the same period.
Nevertheless, Shopee's visitor numbers still significantly outperformed other competitors, such as Lazada, Bukalapak, Blibli, Ralali, Klik Indomaret, JD.ID, Bhinneka, and Matahari.
Before the pandemic, Shopee only had 56 million website visitors per month in the third quarter of 2019. During the pandemic, its visitors increased continuously, but the trend has been declining in the first two quarters of this year, as shown in the graph.
Cumulatively, from the third quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2022, the number of Shopee website visitors grew by approximately 134%.
According to iPrice, during this period, there was a tendency for a shift in Indonesian consumer behavior, from initially accessing e-commerce through mobile applications to accessing it directly through websites. As a result, many other e-commerce companies also experienced website visitor growth.
"In Indonesia, the number of website visits to the top 10 e-commerce sites increased by 64% from the third quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2022," iPrice stated in its press release on Tuesday (October 18, 2022).
"In July 2022, 66% of Indonesian shoppers accessed online shopping websites directly, making it the only channel to experience an increase. Access via search engines, social media, and ads decreased by 13%," it continued.
According to iPrice, this shift in consumer behavior reflects the success of e-commerce players in improving content quality, as well as improving user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) on their websites.
"Considering that many platforms are no longer just product catalogs, but have transformed into lifestyle partners that provide useful information and more personalized recommendations," said iPrice.
