Alert! Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, March 19, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (March 19, 2026) at 19:40 WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 19 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 41 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 19, 2026 from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 127 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 11-28 millimeters and a duration of 34-78 seconds.

Then, 3 emission earthquakes with an amplitude of 6-10 millimeters and a duration of 33-35 seconds as well as 19 harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-28 millimeters and a duration of 30-103 seconds.

PVMBG urges people around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,094 volcanic eruptions/explosions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (589 eruptions) while Mount Ibu erupted 434 times.
